As a teenager, like most of my friends, I was often found playing sports and other games. As I played, I would obviously begin to sweat, and though I knew that sweating was natural, I began to realise that I sweated much more than other children my own age.

It began with my underarms sweating excessively, and I soon noticed my face being affected the same way. I visited a doctor, asking her if the my facial sweating was connected to the sweating in my underarms and she informed me that it was in fact related. She described the condition as ‘Hyperhidrosis’, which is a disorder of one’s sweat glands or sympathetic nervous system.

She went on to explain that excessive facial sweating may show up at anytime and some of the factors responsible for it include stress, anxiety or fear. She also informed me that three types of facial sweating existed namely, palmar excessive sweating, axillary excessive sweating and plantar excessive sweating. The different names simply relate to excessive sweating in different parts of the body. Axillary sweating is related to the armpits, and palmer sweating is related to the excessive sweating of the palms.

As a result of my excessive facial sweating, I began to become extremely self-conscious and tried my best to avoid entering situations that caused me to sweat. Boys in school would be avoided, and so would class presentations. I never managed to wear make-up, because my face was almost always be much too wet and even if it wasn’t, my sweating would completely ruin it. And so my sweating began to affect me worse and worse, causing me loads of embarrassment and humiliation.

Treatment for Facial Sweating

I discovered many treatments, but sadly didn’t consider all of them because of my age. Surgery was an option with a hight success rate, and it involved the burning or cutting of nerve ganglia and sympathetic nerves around the chest region. A less drastic measure is to use a prescription antiperspirants which are much stronger compared to the more common off-the-counter antiperspirants. This works for some people, but not for many people suffering hyperhidrosis.

The procedure I tried, however, was called iontophoresis. More useful for people suffering from sweating in their limbs, the process used a conductor and water to create a small current to pass through you. The water had minerals in it which would then plug up the sweat glands stopping them from producing sweat.

Doctors may also prescribe you oral medication – anticholinergic drugs – which have been found effective in the treatment of facial sweating. However, these drugs may produce side effects and are unsuitable for women who are pregnant or nursing, thus it is important to consult your doctor before you take them.

I know for a fact that excess facial sweating can ruin one’s life, but it is important not to give up hope and to remember that there are a large number of treatments which are available that can help you cope with this condition.

Do you feel nervous if you have to shake hands at a meeting? Do you have to carry extra shirts to the office? Do you look for excuses to refrain from removing your shoes? If so, is it because you sweat excessively from your hands, feet, or underarms? Just because you suffer from hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) there is no need to feel so embarrassed or nervous. There are millions of people just like you suffering from the same condition.

Yes, it is truly an annoying condition. The sweating is uncontrollable, erratic, and unpredictable. Your excessive sweating can make you feel uncomfortable and create an unpleasant odor. You have to take extra care to keep yourself dry and comfortable.

Sweating is a natural process. Sweating keeps your body cool. The sympathetic nervous system helps control your body temperature. When the nervous system detects an increase in your body temperature beyond normal levels, it sends a signal to the sweat glands to become productive. These glands produce sweat. There are more than five million sweat glands throughout your body and around two-thirds of them are in your hands.

The sympathetic nerves initiate sweating. When sweat is released, it evaporates and cools your body. This lowers your body temperature. Some people sweat excessively even under normal circumstances. Sometimes these nerves become overcharged for no apparent reason and cause the sweat glands to release more sweat. Exactly why this

Hyperhidrosis better known as “excessive sweating” in common parlance affects nearly 2% of the population in United States irrespective of race and sex. Hyperhidrosis is essentially a dermatologic and neurological disorder characterized by excessive sweating of the eccrine sweat glands. Hyperhidrosis, which is sweating in excess of that required for normal thermoregulation, is a condition that usually begins in either childhood or adolescence. Although any site on the body can be affected, the sites most commonly affected are the palms, soles, and axillae. Localized hyperhidrosis, unlike generalized hyperhidrosis, usually begins in childhood or adolescence. In a study of 850 patients with palmar, axillary, or facial hyperhidrosis, 62% of patients reported that sweating began since before they could remember; 33%, since puberty; and 5%, during adulthood.

You are not alone if you suffer from excessive sweating. While sweating is a normal human bodily function, some people naturally sweat more or less than others. Millions of people exhibit symptoms of hyperhidrosis–including excessively sweaty palms, sweaty hands, armpits, feet or facial blushing. The degree of sweating varies and may range from tolerable moisture to dripping wet. To understand what is Hyperhidrosis or “excessive sweating”, we need to understand why is “Hyperhidrosis” caused? Generalized hyperhidrosis may be the consequence of autonomic dysregulation, or it may develop secondary to a metabolic disorder, febrile illness, or malignancy. In its localized form, hyperhidrosis may result from a disruption followed by abnormal regeneration of sympathetic nerves or a localized abnormality in the number or distribution of the eccrine glands, or it may be associated with other (usually vascular) abnormalities. Essentially hyperhidrosis, a disorder of the eccrine sweat glands, is associated with sympathetic over activity.

Some individuals sweat in excess, causing problems with school, work, and social situations. It is often a severe and emotionally distressing problem for people with the condition. For those who have never had to suffer from it, it is difficult to imagine the social awkwardness and embarrassment that this condition can cause. Sweating is embarrassing, it stains clothes, ruins romance, and complicates business and social interactions. A person suffering from “excessive sweating” may find it difficult to negotiate everyday social situations that require them to mingle closely with others. Typically these people tend to possess low self-esteem and prefer to remain isolated from their peers.

Untreated, these problems may continue throughout life. Estimates show that only 38% of the patients had discussed their sweating with a health care professional because many are unaware that excessive sweating is a treatable medical disorder. Studies show that hyperhidrosis impacts quality of life as it affects work productivity, confidence, social comfort; emotional well being and wardrobe choices. The good news is that a majority of these symptoms can be successfully treated. Effective treatments are now available to help those with hyperhidrosis. Treatment for hyperhidrosis can be done surgically as well as through effective medical guidance and prescription. Surgery may result in complications and are not reversible, this option is rarely used, and then only as a last resort.

No matter what your age or what type of hyperhidrosis you have, we aim to bring you the latest information on treatments, causes, surgery and hyperhidrosis cures.Learn the right steps to take to eliminate or control hyperhidrosis and be able to live your life without having to worry about excessive sweating.

People are always looking for methods to prevent body odor but the main reason why the perfect method to do so has remained elusive till date is that no one actually knows why some people sweat more than the others. The medical world is at a loss to understand this condition and there are several theories floating around. They have honored the condition with a name though, hyperhidrosis, but are still investigating what causes it.

Sweating is a form of excretion from the body, just as urination is, but sweating can occur anywhere on the entire skin of the body. The skin has sweat pores (medically, sebaceous glands) that are connected to sweat ducts which collect the sweaty excretion and discharge it from the body. Since the sweat ducts are present everywhere on the skin, sweating can happen anywhere.

It is fallacious to think that there are more sweat pores in certain areas of the body, because different people have been known to sweat more from different parts of the body. Most people will sweat profusely from their armpits, but there are so many who sweat excessively from their palms, their soles, necks, chests, backs, foreheads and almost every place that you can think of.

All these things are quite perplexing to the medical fraternity who has found it very difficult to come up with an effective and lasting cure for this problem so far. They believe that the method to prevent underarm sweating can be devised by reducing the activity of the sympathetic nervous system, which seems to be responsible for hyperhidrosis in the first place, but then the sympathetic nervous system is governed by a particular region of the brain, which cannot be effectively pinpointed. Certainly the problem is much larger than it seems.

Methods such as Botox injections are painful and sympathectomies (surgical destruction of the sympathetic nerves) are quite risky. Though people enter these kinds of therapies, they and their treatment providers know that these methods are not going to be permanent, whatever inconvenience they may cause and howsoever much expensive they may be.

The reason why most stop underarm odor methods are inadequate is because the medical world is yet ignorant of what causes excessive sweating. They are not sure which part of the body (or brain) makes it happen, because sweating can occur from all over the skin.

On the contrary, simple methods like drinking lots of water and avoiding stressful conditions are proving to be just as effective in stopping sweating as these medical methods are. It is a very confusing situation both for the doctors as well as for the people who are seeking treatments for their sweaty problems.
